Thailand is the most well-liked tourist destination in South-East Asia and has been for decades. This is because the climate alters throughout the year from hot to cool and even cold, if you would like to look for it; Thai food is world-renowned; the range of wildlife is broad as is the flora; the diving is fantastic and the people are friendly and welcoming. Thailand is not known as the Land of Smiles for no reason.

There are also a great deal of festivals, some of which are religious, which means Buddhist, and others are not. Thailand has been Buddhist ever since the country came into being in the Thirteen Century, but the people were Buddhist long before that. Or at least the majority of them were. There were also throw-backs to older religions just as in the West.

In the West Christmas and Easter were moved to conceal pagan festivals, but in Thailand they merely have the old festivals too. One of the biggest festivals is Loy Krathong in November (the first full moon in the twelfth lunar month). Loy Krathong is a charming festival to placate the goddess or water, Ganga, for using and abusing (polluting) her.

These days, people still remember the old meaning of Loy Krathong (‘Floating Boats’), but it has been taken adopted by lovers too. People float symbolic boats out onto the water and ask the goddess to pardon them and to grant a wish. Lovers send their boats out together and numerous people believe that if the boats, krathong, float out side-by-side then they will have a trouble-free year together.

Numerous women don traditional Thai costumes for the evening, especially if they are going out for a meal or to a party. Some men do as well, but not so many.

Also in November is the world-famous Elephant roundup in Surin. The elephant roundup is also well-liked with foreigners and Thais alike. The city of Surin is full on this weekend so if you want to go it is worth booking your hotel with your travel ticket otherwise you might be stranded. Not that it is cold or likely to rain.

Bridge Over the River Kwae week is in November. The bridge is a moving reminder of the horror that prisoners of war from all over the world experienced at the hands of the Japanese overlords at the time. More Thais died than foreigners although Thailand was thought of as ‘friendly’ by the occupying Japanese.

In December it is the King’s birthday and Fathers’ Day on the 5th. The king is very highly esteemed in Thailand and numerous people will light candles in their garden on the roadside to the king in the early evening. This is a very pretty sight, particularly in the villages where street lighting is usually minimal. Constitution Day is on the 10th and is a bank holiday, which normally means a party.

Christmas is feted in the cities by tourists, ex-pats and young Thais although it has no real religious implication outside the Christian churches in the larger cities.

New Year’s Day is huge. There are parties that will last all night, dancing, feasting and fireworks.

Thailand is a great place to come to in November and December and although it is considered high season, I am sure that you will find it cheaper to come on vacation to Thailand – The Land of Smiles – than it is to stay at home in the cold.

Coastal Cottages

14 November 2010

Seaside holidays are extremely popular which is why every year, millions of tourists head for seaside beaches. Perhaps you like coastal holidays too. seaside holidays are fabulous, but that can be the problem too, because it frequently means overcrowding, queuing, rubbish and noise. Have you ever thought about renting your own private coastal cottage? Many only dream about it, but it is not that difficult or costly to arrange actually.

One item to bear in mind is that, public beaches are well-known and that is why they get too busy. However, private coastal cottages are often secluded or on private beaches, which makes for a much quieter holiday. Often, local people living only miles from the cottage do not know that they exist. In spite of this, most coastal cottages do not cost a lot of money to rent.

These coastal cottages are to be had in many countries around the world. They are unquestionably very popular in Britain, Europe and the United States. The degree of privacy and the facilities available will depend on where you go. A coastal cottage in Wales will give you a very different holiday than a coastal cottage in southern France or Coney Island.

Many coastal cottages are located near a popular holiday destination. Not right in the middle of the location, but normally a few miles or less outside, so that you can easily drive in or even walk in, if you want some livelier entertainment. Typical coastal cottage leisure activities include swimming, sailing, fishing and walking.

Of course, one of the chief considerations when renting a cottage is the rent itself. Now the funny thing is that is not nearly such a big concern as you might think it would be. The macro location is more important than the micro location. So, Wales might be cheaper than the south of France, but within Wales itself, there is not a huge variation in price, when you equate like with like. Obviously, a five-bedroomed coastal cottage will be more expensive than a three-bedroomed one.

Another situation worth looking into is the ownership of the coastal cottage. Is it owned by a private individual who lives near-by or is it owned by a large business. Is the cottage a real, original cottage or is it a new, mock cottage building? If it is old, is it connected with anyone famous or a famous event? Knowing these facts can all heighten your enjoyment.

Make certain that you are given some maps or drawings so that you can find the place easily. Especially if you are travelling to the cottage in the evening or in the dark. Things often look considerably different at night than in the daylight, and if your chosen cottage is in a quiet spot, there may not be any street lighting

Finally, get hold of some pictures of inside and outside the coastal cottage you ultimately decide on and then book it early, because the best coastal cottages go earlier and earlier every year as this form of vacationing becomes ever more popular.

You have surely seen auto navigation systems in your friends’ vehicles and you could be on the point of getting one yourself. It is definitely true that the auto navigation systems are impressive and the price of a set-up has fallen quite radically over the last few years. There are indeed many benefits to be derived from using an auto navigation system, which is also known as sat nav.

In this piece, we will take a look at some of the most important benefits of using a sat nav system.

Safety is paramount in whatever pursuit you undertake and safety has to be taken into account when driving too. It is difficult to know whether the world used to be a safer place or not, but it is a fact that these days more people are wary of getting embroiled with strangers than they were before.

Solitary drivers do not want to stop a stranger and admit that they are lost or even stranded. Maybe the stranger will send you into an ambush, set up hastily over a mobile phone as you drive off blissfully suspecting nothing. People have become very suspicious of strangers.

It goes without saying that solitary female drivers are the most distrustful of asking strangers for directions, but families with children are often very wary as well.

Having an auto navigation system solves this problem, because you will never get lost again, assuming that the sat nav unit is wired to your car battery or you have spare batteries for a hand-held device in the glove compartment.

Confidence in getting to your destination on time, if you leave early enough, is another major benefit. Traffic jams, road works, accidents and natural catastrophes will no longer be surprises to you and your sat nave system will be able to propose alternative routes in order to avoid the obstacle. This is a very big benefit.

You will no longer have to leave really early to make sure you miss the traffic or to make sure you get somewhere on time. Sat nav will give your ETA. This can save you a whole load of anxiety, especially if you have to be in certain places for work or the kids all the way through the day.

Not to have to juggle with maps is a boon as well. No more folding and refolding maps and struggling to remember sections of the route and then stopping to check and remember the next part of the route. Maps are always out of date too. New sections of motorway are always being added and small roads are sometimes closed for a new housing project. Paper maps just cannot keep up.

The last but not necessarily the least major advantage is the freedom an auto navigation system gives to you in your spare time. It opens up the countryside If you were always a little uneasy about going on a Sunday drive because you did not know the way or did not have a co-pilot to read the map, now you can just go with your auto navigation system.

Porsche 977

22 October 2010

A new Porsche 911 is always intriguing because it’s exciting to see how after more than 40 years of improvement the Porsche team still manages to bring changes and improvements to this iconic exemplar.

The new 997 blends the silky modern looks of the 996 series with the fashionable retro styling of the older 911’s. The front end is finished with round lights and separate parking/fog/indicator lights. This modification, coupled with wider hips echoes the last of the air-cooled 911’s, the 993. Other changes in the body shell are the new door handles, wing mirrors and the trendy cut of the rear wings into the bumper/lights.

Even if the 997 looks a great deal like the previous model, the 996, the new car is in point of fact 38mm wider which makes for a more forceful look. With each new model introduced, Porsche has tried to lessen the drag co-efficient helping the 911 slide through the air more effectively thus increasing performance. The same thing has been done with the new car, and if we compare the 993 Cd of 0.34 to the 997`s 0.28, we can perceive how far the aerodynamic game has moved on. The latest body shell and rear wing combine with new under body paneling to also offer improved levels of down force for this latest generation of Porsche’s best.

The latest Porsche model has the best handling 911 ever. Improving a car’s firmness helps ensure that the suspension can work more effectively and although not making such a quantum leap as the team did with the 996, Porsche enhanced torsional rigidity by 8% and added as much as 40% more strength.

For their new model car, Porsche sought to improve crash safety provisions so they added two new air bags, which are situated in the side of each front seat back-rest and are calculated to protect the thorax. They also retained the previous two front and two side airbags, which means that now there are six air bags in total. For the same reason, that is crash safety, the reinforced body shell boasts further protection such as a more extensive use of super high strength steel.

The most recent model is also 50 kg heavier than the 996. The reason is that modern crash safety regulations sort of force vehicle makers to produce new cars of increased weight, despite the prevalent use of a large range of weight saving measures, such as an aluminum bonnet.

Aside from the crash safety advancements, much of the additional weight can be attributed to the higher standard specifications of the new cars. The power to weight ratio is analogous with the latest car offering 233 bhp per tonne against it’s predecessors 238 but the new model’s superior aerodynamics must help it achieve Porsche’s claimed performance figures, which are identical to those of the 996.

Vacation Property For Rent

19 October 2010

If you are thinking of buying a vacation rental property, there are two things that you can ultimately do with it. Some owners of vacation rental property intend to live in it most of the year round themselves and others intend to rent it out for most of the year. There is no doubt that vacation rental property can present an excellent income stream.

However, there is a huge difference between vacation property rental and residential property rental. This has to do with the fact that holiday makers are not inevitably looking for the same amenities in a vacation rental property as they are in a home.

One thing that does affect the desirability of both vacation rental property and residential property is location. However, a good residential property for a young family may need to be close to schools and other amenities and for older people being near a school is more like a hassle.

Similarly with vacation rental property, you have to know your target market. You have to discover the answer to the question: why do people come to this location? And then buy a vacation rental property that matches the highest volume profile.

In this way, you will never be short of tenants and you will be sure of high rents too. For instance, some people might go to the Caribbean island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands for the diving opportunities it presents while others may want to investigate the tropical rain forests. However, younger travelers might not want to go far from the only largish town on the island, Christiansted, so that they can take part in any nightlife going on.

One thing that everyone requires is security. The person who rents your vacation rental property will want to feel safe. That is secure from falling masonry and rickety stairs and secure from burglars. That means that your property should be well lit both internally and externally and have sturdy doors and locks. Windows should be lockable too.

It is a good idea to provide a kitchen like the one a family would usually expect at home. So, an American kitchen with American style appliances for American families, if they are the people you are trying to attract. Again, you will have to investigate the typical visitors to where you want to buy a vacation rental property. A younger family may eat in at night, an older one may never eat in at all. The kitchen should be well-equipped, furnishings should be comfortable and recreational gear should be provided too.

A great deal of people like to take their dogs with them, so you might like to consider making the vacation rental property friendly for pet owners. If the furniture is robust, massive oak or something similar, dogs will not be able to damage it easily. Plastered walls without wall covering and tiled floors are also conducive to having animals in the house. This is a definitely growing niche market for vacation rental properties

And last but not least, remember that people like to be able to keep in touch when they are away from their loved ones, so Internet access is a growing essential too. People can VOIP, so a phone is not so imperative these days. If you bear these points in mind, you can have a profitable vacation rental property where you can holiday free too.

Auto navigation systems have been improved a great deal since they were developed by the US military in the Sixties and Seventies. In fact, their development is a continuous process, as you can easily imagine. I remember in the Eighties when you got a fix on your position every twelve minutes or so.

This meant that ’sat nav’ was great for shipping and yachts, but not much good for cars or other fast-moving vehicles. They were also rather expensive and quite large, not like the devices that cyclists can get in a wrist watch these days.

In spite of the fact that sat nav has advanced far enough for companies to be able to manufacture affordable auto navigation systems, there are still problems with them. But there is nothing new about that, it has become normal to start selling a product while it is still at some phase of improvement.

Look at MS Widows for an example; it is nearly thirty years old and still does not work seamlessly – it is still ‘under improvement’. The same is true of auto navigation systems.

And part of the problem is with the software running the device. Software is a very tricky thing, as Windows proves to its users every day. I am not of necessity criticizing Windows software, it is probably the best of its class, but then there is no real competition for it and that is a shame for all the usual reasons such as apathy, high-handedness and over-pricing, just look at Windows ‘Vista’. What an expensive pile of junk that was.

Needless to say, if Microsoft cannot get their software right, then auto navigation systems cannot either. Therefore, it is imperative to use an auto navigation system that either frequently updates itself automatically or allows the user to do it manually.

You have to have the latest bug-fixes to the software and the latest updates to the maps. Ideally, the system will update itself every day automatically, but you ought to do it manually at least before each extensive journey.

The signal is obviously very significant too. In order to get a fix on your position at least three satellites have to be able to ’see’ your auto navigation system. If a fourth can corroborate the data, then so much the better.

This means that you may vanish ‘off the radar’, so to speak, if you are travelling under ground or in mostly built-up locations. Being seen by one or two satellites is not good enough, there is no triangulation.

It is rational to assume that if you have a clear view of the sky, then the three or four satellites should have a clear view of you, but it is not an infallible check. The best thing to have with you is still common sense. Do not just depend on your auto navigation system blindly. If you think it is giving you a false reading, it might be.

In this situation, the best thing to do is think about whether you or it is right and check it with a map if you have one. If all else fails, take a bit of advice often made by Windows support, turn the device off, count to ten and turn it back on again – in other words, reboot it.

Satellite radio has really taken off in some parts of the world, predominantly in countries with a huge land mass. Places like America, Canada, Europe and Australia, places where it is difficult to realize national coverage with traditional land-based radio broadcasting without hundreds of expensive sub-stations to amplify the signal.

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt, satellite radio is here to stay for several reasons. First of all, satellite radio is digital and therefore is able to deliver sound of very high quality. Terrestrial digital radio can do that too, you might say.

Yes, that is correct, but the coverage of terrestrial digital radio is quite small which means tht if you are driving a long distance, you will have to keep retuning your radio to a new station, whereas with satellite, the footprint can cover thousands of square miles.

Many new satellite radio channels are springing up all the time. It seems that everyone wants to get their hands on this new marvel of wide-area coverage at a cheaper rate than it used to cost to cover a county. And why not? The advertising possibility is quite fantastic compared to the old style local AM or FM radio stations. Radio has now gone countrywide.

Playboy Satellite radio is one of those firms that has grasped the potential of satellite radio and set up its own channel with a large footprint. It was launched in March 2006 on the Sirius network by Christie Hefner and now boasts over one million subscribers, which is a truly impressive figure. There have almost certainly never before been a million opt-in subscribers to any radio network channel ever in times gone by before.

What makes this figure of one million subscribers even more striking is that the Playboy satellite radio channel is not part of a package or a bundle of other channels. No, people have to voluntarily phone up or go to the Playboy website and ask for membership in person, that is to say that it costs time and effort to sign up and one million people thought that it was worth it.

Something else that is curious is that the Playboy brand is associated with visual stuff – naked ladies, in fact – and radio is well-known for not being very good at visual representation. It is clear that no radio station is going to make much progress in the market place using nudity as a trump card.

So what is going on here? Well, the fact is that no-one is really completely certain. You have to subscribe, but it is free at the moment. It is also true that the Playboy brand name is considered cool and distinctive among a certain stratum of society, but will that be enough to keep people tuned in? Only time will tell.

The answer almost certainly lies in the fact that it is free and that it can be accessed over a large area, but they cannot be the only causes. There is probably a novelty value too and the quality of the programmes will have to be high as well.

Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, which lie 1730 miles east south east of Miami and 93 miles west of Puerto Rico. This sector of the Virgin Islands has belonged to the United States since 1917 when they were purchased from the Danish government for $25m in gold to safeguard American coasts from German U-boat attack.

At the time, it was feared that Germany would subjugate the islands and construct submarine pens there in order to attack American supply shipping, which was essential to the allies in Europe during the First World War.

The US Virgin islands is a group of about 60 largely unpopulated islands, the four biggest of which are called St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. (By the way, ‘Saint’ is pronounced in the English manner). The Islands’ residents, however, have other names for these four which are Twin City, Rock City, Love City and Small City respectively.

Christopher Columbus landed there on November 14th, 1493, but there is evidence of human habitation on the island going back to 5000 BC. In fact, the Arawaks and the Caribs made up the islands’ populace, before the Europeans arrived.

Possession of St Croix and the other Virgin Islands changed a lot over the following centuries, but it became infamous to many people as Santa Cruz, which is its Spanish name. As Santa Cruz, St Croix featured prominently in 17th and 18th century stories of pirates and buccaneers on the Spanish Main.

In fact, after Spain initially took control of the island, it changed hands seven times; having been Spanish, British, French, Maltese, Dutch, Danish and now American. The inhabitants of the US Virgin Islands are now US citizens and carry US passports. They also use the US dollar and US laws.

St Croix was an agricultural powerhouse in the Caribbean until the 1960’s when the local government determined it was time to industrialize. The island is now home to HOVENSA, one of the largest oil refineries in the world.

There is also a large distillery, the Cruzan Rum Distillery, which used to produce rum from sugar cane grown on the island. Sugar cane, or its extract, molasses are now imported from the Dominican Republic to manufacture Southern Comfort and Cruzan Rum. Diageo is planning to build a distillery there too in order to produce Captain Morgan Rum.

Inhabitants of the island call themselves Crucians. However, there is a great deal of debate about what constitutes a ‘real Crucian’. Many say that a Crucian is someone who was born and raised on St Croix, while others claim that descendants of the slaves that the Danes brought over in 16th and 17th Centuries are the only true Crucians.

Many Crucians can trace their ancestry back to Puerto Rico or other Virgin islands as the sugar cane industry attracted a lot of migrant workers in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. There was also an inflow of down-islanders (ie from other Caribbean islands), as the residents say, after the industrialization of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands in the 1960’s and 1970’s as tourism and oil became more central to the economy.
